Sealants
A sealant is a tooth-colored or clear plastic material applied to your back teeth chewing surfaces, where tooth decay occurs most often. Sealants cover the grooves and pits of these chewing surfaces, effectively sealing out food and germs that could potentially cause tooth decay. The best time to have tooth sealant placed is as soon as the permanent molars come in.
Dental sealants are placed simply and painlessly. The procedure usually lasts for just a few minutes. After the tooth is cleaned, it is treated with a special solution that will allow the sealant to adhere to the tooth. The sealant is painted on, and it then quickly hardens to form a protective barrier or shield over the tooth. When properly taken care of, tooth sealant can last up to 10 years.
